Throughout the season, our athletes gain invaluable life skills, such as time management while juggling practices, games, and homework. They also develop essential communication and self-advocacy skills, benefiting not only their relationships with teammates but also with their coaches.
Last week, our athletes faced some challenging situations that put these skills to the test. On Tuesday, as our teams geared up for practices and competitions, the wind brought smoke into the area. We found ourselves constantly refreshing multiple apps to check the Air Quality Index (AQI). Prior to the match, the Athletic Trainer consulted with both coaches and recommended modifications to our match format. They also warned us that if the air quality continued to deteriorate, we would need to suspend play. When the air quality reached an unsafe threshold we had to stop the match points away from a victory.
On Thursday, our volleyball team commenced league play amid an enthusiastic but boisterous student section. While the crowd wasn't intentionally disrespectful, their actions, such as pointing and laughing at mistakes, can be distracting. Such moments are not easy for anyone to navigate, but they provide valuable opportunities for growth.
It is often said that participation in sports helps develop character. However, I believe that it not only builds character but also reveals it. These challenges and triumphs on and off the field shape our athletes into resilient, adaptable, and well-rounded individuals.
