Last Thursday, I traveled to San Diego for the 56th Annual California State Athletic Directors Association Conference, themed All Duties, All Day. This year's conference was a whirlwind of inspiring speakers and valuable lessons. Among the many motivational messages, one speaker's words deeply resonated with me about the power of belonging, specifically in education based athletics. She lamented on the change she witnessed in her family when her second child belonged to a team and had stronger connection and purpose for school. The remaining presentations emphasized embracing mistakes and viewing improvement as a journey, not just a destination marked by victories. In the world of sports, it's often tempting to measure success solely by winning seasons. But true success lies in continuous learning and growth. In education, as in athletics, consistent commitment is key. Coaches dedicate themselves to our athletes day in and day out throughout the seasons. Similarly, it's crucial for student-athletes to consistently show up, as the most important skill they can possess is simply being present. The best ability is availability. What they invest in their sport is ultimately what they'll reap in return. These conferences always provide great direction for the coming months and year ahead. I am grateful to Mercy in supporting professional development and eager to continue to grow our department.
