Over the weekend, I had the opportunity to attend the final USF Women's Tennis Match at Golden Gate Park. It was a bittersweet occasion, especially with the recent announcement that both the men's and women's programs would be ending after this season. In response, alumni and supporters rallied to show their love for the teams in their remaining matches. Despite the news, the atmosphere was electric as we feverishly cheered on our team, echoing "Go Dons" throughout the afternoon. As former teammates gathered, we couldn't help but reminisce about our own experiences representing the University and the memories we shared.
For our community, it's essential to recognize that only a small fraction, about 0.02%, will transition to collegiate sports. The landscape of college athletics is evolving, especially with the introduction of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities. However, amidst these changes, one constant remains, the unwavering support from fellow student-athletes and the community.
At the match, I was heartened to see not just tennis enthusiasts but also members from the soccer team, triathlon team, and even the mascot showing their solidarity. While it's disheartening to witness programs being cut from university athletic departments, it underscores the significance of interscholastic athletics.
As universities make difficult decisions about their athletic programs, it reinforces the importance of growing sports programs at the high school level. It is encouraging to note that despite these challenges, we are expanding our athletic offerings, with the addition of a Flag Football program this fall.
While the collegiate sports landscape may shift, the spirit of teamwork, community support, and the love for the game remain constant. It's a reminder for our athletes and parents to cherish every moment on the field, court, or track, knowing that the bonds forged through sports endure beyond any season or program.
